Single's Ministry

Good evening! Welcome to 2010!!

Tonight I thought we would begin the New Year by taking a look at the foundational scripture of 'Living Sacrifices'.

Dawn and I had been asking God to lead us in the direction He would have us take this ministry, and He impressed Romans 12 upon my heart. As we studied this part of scripture, it was apparent the entire chapter dealt with what we believe He would have this ministry to be:

  • We are to present ourselves wholly to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ (Rom_12:1-4);
  • We are to serve others, as God has given us the gifts and talents to share and serve (Rom_12:6-13 an>);
  • And we are to learn to be content with our present state (Rom_12:18-21).

We should understand, right from the start, this is not something we can do on our own, or by ourselves. God- in the person of the Holy Spirit- must do it in us, and through us. As the scriptures say:

Php 4:13 I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

So, with that before us, let's open our bible, please, to Romans 12, and let's look at this together. We will not get the entire chapter covered tonight, but that's okay- it gives us something to look forward to, as we work our way through this very important chapter.

Romans, chapter 12, from verse 1:

Rom 12:1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

Rom 12:2 And be not conformed to this world: but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

Rom 12:3 For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God has dealt to every man the measure of faith.

Rom 12:4 For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office:

Rom 12:5 So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another.

Rom 12:6 Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith;

Rom 12:7 Or ministry, let us wait on our ministering: or he that teaches, on teaching;

Rom 12:8 Or he that exhorts, on exhortation: he that gives, let him do it in simplicity; he that rules, with diligence; he that shows mercy, with cheerfulness.

Rom 12:9 Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good.

Rom 12:10 Be tender loving one to another with brotherly love; in honor preferring one another;

Rom 12:11 Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord;

Rom 12:12 Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; constant in prayer;

Rom 12:13 Distributing to the necessity of saints; given to hospitality.

Rom 12:14 Bless them who persecute you: bless, and curse not.

Rom 12:15 Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep.

Rom 12:16 Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits.

Rom 12:17 Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men.

Rom 12:18 If it be possible, as much as lies in you, live peaceably with all men.

Rom 12:19 Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, says the Lord.

Rom 12:20 Therefore if your enemy hungers, feed him; if he thirsts, give him drink: for in so doing you shall heap coals of fire on his head.

Rom 12:21 Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.

What does it mean to be "in the service of God"or "in the service of Christ"? I mean, we have all heard it said, and we may even have said it ourselves a few times. "I'm here to serve God the Father;" "I'm serving Jesus"

But what does it mean?

Well, we have several examples within scripture, so let's put on our spiritual running shoes, and take a quick look at a few examples.

Mary & Martha: Here are two sisters and friends of Jesus. As we see in Luke chapter 10, both are serving Jesus when he arrives at the home of Martha (verse 38-40):

Luk 10:38 Now it happened as they went that He entered a certain village; and a certain woman named Martha welcomed Him into her house.

Luk 10:39 And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus' feet and heard His word.

Luk 10:40 But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she approached Him and said, "Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore tell her to help me."

*Martha is busy serving him Him by welcoming Him into her home, then preparing the house and meal for Him, and the enterage with Him.

*Mary is also busy serving Him by being single-minded and focusing upon Jesus as He shared his word with everyone within the house.

Both served Him- one focused on busyness of service, and another focused on studying. Neither is wrong- perhaps differing priorities, but not wrong. The Life Application Study Bible Commentary reads:

"Mary and Martha both loved Jesus. On this occasion they were both serving him. But Martha thought Mary's style of serving was inferior to hers. She didn't realize that in her desire to serve, she was actually neglecting her guest.

Scripture teaches us that in those days one was to serve by welcoming others into the home, washing their feet, feeding them, and putting them up for the night (Genesis 19:2, 1 Samuel 25:41, John 13:6 & 8). But Jesus wasn't interested in others serving Him as much as he was interested in others hearing His message, and then sharing it with others. That was service to Him.

How about Moses: Here is a man who was charged with leading Israel out of Egypt, but it wasn't going to be an easy task serving God.(Exodus) Threatened with death when merely an infant (Exodus 1:16), brought up in the home of Pharaoh (Exodus 2:6-10), then threatened again by the same man whose home he has lived in (Exodus 2:15). He escapes to Midian, where he settles down (Exodus 2:15).

Then the encounter: He is minding his own business, serving his father-in-law, tending his flock, when he looks up to see the Angel of the Lord in the burning bush (Exodus 3:1-3). He is charged with returning to Pharaoh to bring Israel out of bondage and oppression at the hands of the Egyptians (Exodus 3:10). And after going head-to-head with Pharaoh, in miracles and plagues, the Israelites are sent out (Ex 12:31-36)- but not straight to the promised land. They are sent on a 40 year exodus to a place that was actually a few day's journey away (Ex 13:17-22). All during this time, they oppressed and challenged Moses and God. Talk about tough service- ended up costing Moses his life, before he was to enter the Promised Land (Deut. 34:4-5), because even he disobeyed God, in his frustration with his service (Numbers 20:7-12):

Choices

This evening, we're going to look at an all too common challenge to our walks- choosing to Sin, choosing to Suffer.

As far back as the Garden of Eden we have great examples of this challenge. Turn with me, if you will, to the book of Genesis, Chapter 2. We all know the story- Adam is in the Garden, and God had told him the only tree he shall not eat of was the Tree of The Knowledge of Good and Evil.

Keep in mind, God doesn't tell us not to do something because He is a killjoy, nor is He trying to ruin our "fun." He tells us not to do something because He knows what's best for us, and He doesn't want us to hurt ourselves. So here we are- verse 15:

Gen 2:15 Then the LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to tend and keep it.

Gen 2:16 And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, "Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat;

Gen 2:17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die."

Sounds pretty straightforward and simple, doesn't it?

Folks, take a second and look up here, at me, please. Manmy of you will boast about your marriage, but Dawn and I have the best marriage in that she loves to cook, and I love to eat! Now I know you can't tell by just looking at me, but I have the wonderful blessing of being able to eat huge amounts of almost anything. As an example of my wonderful blessing, one evening early in our marriage, my beautiful bride prepared a pound of homemade three cheese, macaroni & cheese for dinner! It was a delicious meal, but part way through it she made the comment we would have leftovers, because there was no way we were going to finish the mac & cheese at this sitting. Well, let me tell you- there were no leftovers that night! I sat there and ate the remaining 3/4 pounds of her delicious, homemade three cheese, mac & cheese and five sausages all in one sitting! Afterwards, I was still hungry. So I topped it off with something else- I think it was a big bowl of ice cream, or something- and I still wasn't full!! She was stunned and amazed at how much I could pack away, and wonders to this day where I put it all! (I pat both my legs and tell her they are hollow, which is why I can eat so much- it never gets up to my stomach!) Anyway, telling Adam of the tree in the Garden would be like Dawn making a feast for me, fit for royalty, and saying "you can have anything you see, except this particular dish, which you have never had before." I don't know what it is, and I've never had it before, so it isn't something I crave or will miss. But it sure looks good, smells delicious, and might good for me. Pretty straightforward and simple right? Let’s see.
